IV Sedation Dentistry
IV sedation uses intravenous and is administered by an anesthesiologist to relax you without making you completely unconscious (in most cases). The anesthesiologist remains present during the procedure to make sure you maintain your relaxed state, feel comfortable, and watch your vitals. Though you will remain conscious, you will feel extremely sleepy and relaxed without being aware of the dental work.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry
Rather than being administered through a needle, nitrous oxide sedation is administered as a gas more commonly known as “laughing gas.” Depending on the procedure, the amount of sedation administered could simply make you sleepy, or it could send you into a state of complete unconsciousness. Nonetheless, it proves very helpful in reducing patient anxiety.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation keeps you conscious but makes you feel very sleepy and relaxed. This form of sedation is administered as specifically-timed pills. Your dentist will give you directions on how to best prepare, including any changes to your diet or personal medications, to ensure that the sedation takes proper effect during your procedure. They will also let you know whether you need to be picked up after the procedure.
